New Freedom is 59 miles and about a 1.5 hour drive from Chambersburg. New Freedom is the high point of the trail, so heading into MD will be a slight down hill ride until turning around. It will be an out and back ride. Length of your choice.
The off-road crushed-stone trail rolls south for nearly 20 miles from New Freedom, PA (It connects to the Heritage Rail Trail we rode 2 yrs ago) winding along river valleys through the picturesque rolling hills of northern Maryland. The trail was the former Northern Central Railroad. Old signposts, marked with a “W” to signal train engineers to blow their whistles, still dot the route. The corridor was constructed in the 1830s. Abraham Lincoln rode it from Baltimore to Hanover Junction to deliver the Gettysburg Address.
Bathrooms are available on the trail – first one is 3 mi. from the start. We will meet for lunch at 12:30 at Seven Bar & Grill near the bike shop. They describe their food as elevated bar fare & American cuisine – salads, burgers, and entrees. We enjoyed our lunch there.
